There’s been several conversations I’ve had with various artists and cultural workers over the past year, regarding ‘the problem of performance art.’ I gather some of these ideas – and opinions – here, to proffer some praise and dismissal of the often controversial platform of performance art.
Joel Smith’s images of the Carolinian Forest are both evocative on their own, but also in how they related to the works of other artists exploring the emotive and ephemeral symbolism of landscape.
Sandy Fairbairn has been taking photographs of Niagara for over forty years, focusing on the people and places around him. His images of Niagara stretch back to the 1970s, and some of the scenes presented in Welland: Time Present Time Past will be shown in the Rose City for the very first time. I curated this exhibition, and offer some ideas that informed it, and that grew out of it.
